So, you're interested in setting up a tax day rally? That's great! In this tool kit, we'll provide all the info you need to be successful. Your event can be as simple as gathering a couple of friends and handing out literature or as complicated as a large rally. Come April 15th, the goal is to educate the country - the LGBT community pays taxes just like everyone else, and we need equal rights. We have literature available to hand out that describes some of the rights we are lacking, or you can use your own flyers.
STEP 1: SIGN UP
Go to the signup webpage (www.jointheimpactma.com/taxday/) and enter the post office where you will be on tax day. It's ok if you don't have all the details figured out just yet - you can always update the information later. If you are a part of an organization, your organization can sign up to be the host.
STEP 2: GET ORGANIZED
Depending on what type of event you want to have, you may not have to do all of these
*Print out literature to hand out to people passing by
*Make signs calling for "Equal Taxes, Equal Rights"
*Generally, you do not need a permit if only a couple of people will be passing out information on the sidewalk. However, if you expect a larger crowd, call your city hall to inquire about a permit
*If you want to have a rally, invite some community leaders or eloquent friends to speak.
*Feel free to personalize your event! Creativity is an excellent thing.
STEP 3: GET THE WORD OUT
*Send a press release to the local newspapers. A sample press release is in the toolkit. Media attention is a very good thing - it means that many people are exposed to the fight for equality
*Write a letter to the editor of local newspapers.
*Email other LGBT groups and allies that you know, invite them to stop by your event or to host their own.
*Make a facebook event and invite all your friends.
